Recommended period: May to September (Booking required).
The Punta Campanella excursion, also known as Path 300 or the "Heart Path" (due to the heart-shaped rock formations visible to the naked eye), offers breathtaking views over the Bay of Ieranto. Located in the charming village of Termini (Massa Lubrense) within the Sorrento Peninsula, the trail is part of the Punta Campanella Marine Protected Area. This area marks the final stretch of the magnificent "Alta Via dei Monti Lattari," a magical place steeped in history and legends.
The trek begins in Piazza Santa Croce (Termini) with a descent along the ancient Via Minerva, a Greco-Roman mule track built in the 4th century B.C. (still partially paved with original Roman stones). This path leads directly to the Punta Campanella lighthouse. In antiquity, this site housed a temple dedicated to Athena-Minerva, founded by Odysseus (Ulysses) to thank the Goddess for protecting him on his journey back to Ithaca.
From the lighthouse, a challenging uphill climb begins, featuring some narrow, exposed sections with stunning views of Capri and its Faraglioni. This leads to the summit of Mount San Costanzo (486m) and its small chapel, overlooking the Bay of Ieranto and Marina del Cantone. The 360-degree panorama spans from the Gulf of Naples to the Gulf of Salerno, including Mount Vesuvius, the islands of Capri, Ischia, and Procida, and stretching as far as Mount Circeo, Gaeta, and Ventotene. The return journey follows an easier path through a pine forest, reaching the starting point in less than an hour.
