The CAI has defined a difficulty scale based on the following characteristics: the surface of the terrain, the length of the route, the difference in altitude and altitude, the exposure, any orientation difficulties.

• Tourist Itinerary T Narrow streets, mule tracks and easy paths without exposed sections. Maximum duration of 2/3 hours of walking. Well signposted and without orientation problems. Maximum altitude below 2000 metres.
• Hiking Itinerary E More or less bumpy paths and tracks. They can be done on steep slopes and require the use of your hands to maintain balance. Possible presence of short snow-covered stretches. Itineraries on easy terrain but lasting more than 3 hours. They may present orientation problems. Maximum altitude above 2000 metres.
• Itineraries for Experienced Hikers EE Tracks on impervious and/or slippery terrain, high altitude scree, etc. Sections without signs or known reference points.
• The routes equipped with fixed ropes, chains or ladders (via ferrata) are called EEA; must be addressed with adequate equipment and experience. require the use of snowshoes, have easy access routes, take place at the bottom of the valley or in wooded areas or on ridges which guarantee, overall, safe travelability.
